Tips on choosing a CSA
Local Harvest provides an excellent, searchable database of CSA farms around the country, as well as other direct market farms. Listings are maintained by the farmers themselves. Use the widget to the right to find a CSA farm that serves your area. Type in your zip code and hit return. If you’re a farmer wanting to list your CSA their services are free, but a donation is recommended to help support their ongoing commitment to promoting sustainable farming connections.
Once you’ve found a CSA farm, compare:
Pay special attention to the following and how they best fit your household situation:
•size and makeup of harvest share
•distribution days and locations
•length of season
•available options
Contacting the farmers and asking questions about the farm, growing practices, history, etc. provides valuable information about the food you are considering signing up for and the farm you are considering supporting. Often there is good information available on farm websites, but it doesn’t always answer all of your questions. Visiting the farm is also an excellent way to learn more about farm. Some farms restrict visits so please respect their work schedules and contact them first.
CSA is a broad model and the boundaries of what is possible are continuing to be pushed by new and existing CSA farms. Often the term is used loosely and there is no official regulation of the term. No two CSA farms are exactly alike so make sure not to compare CSA farms on one criteria alone.
